It really doesn't take that much effort to name a golf course something else. You spend millions of dollars building a golf course and you can't take 2 minutes to name it something unique.

Great to hear from you, Patrick. This is probably not something that can be summarized in a blog comment, but your remarks made me wonder: How do you think golf will grow in China?

I totally agree with Cindy Reid's views on China Golf. As an American living in Beijing working in the golf industry I have a lot of people contact me regarding the China Golf Boom. China golf is definitely growing but nothing like we saw in the US in 1990's. Will it boom? Yes, it could. Golf here is different from that in the West. One has to first understand China and the Chinese culture to understand the way golf will develop here. This is very important and many Americans overlook this. When I came to China I was like many others thinking that golf would absolutely explode here. Living here for a few years has helped me understand the way golf will grow well in Asia. It is definitely an interesting time to be in China and to do our best to help the game grow Internationally.

Dear Dan,
A few points:
1. We call it Golden Piddle Beach, because it such a missed opportunity for great golf course architecture. Whether it was the fault of the construction, or the architect: US based Park Planner Peter Thompson bears no relationship to Golfing Great and master architect Peter Thomson and that should always be pointed out.
2. Golden Piddle Beach is never even mentioned at the Golf Digest (China) annual ratings meeting. Never. Some of the holes seem to be designed to obscure the cliffs and ocean views. When I visited the course was in horrible condition, the staff unfriendly, and management was held hostage to the local Korean mafia (all cash taken away each day, never to see its way back into maintenance budget)
3. Information about golf in China for Tom Friedman's story in about golf in China was taken from a long piece by a US golf teacher (rollerbladed around China, Peter something, if I recollect. FYI, I've known Tom since 1982 when we played golf in Beirut. Most recently we played the East Course at Kau Sai Chau in Hong Kong.
4. Maybe North Shore in Liaoning has matured. A links course designed by Walter Woods, for 28 years superintendent at St. Andrews Old Course, and a Japanese developer on a superior cliffside site with views from every hole, a mini version of Old Head, County Cork, which I just visited in June.

Regards,
Robin Moyer
